AquaDom, the world's largest cylindrical aquarium

02 enero 2007

Placed at the lobby of the Radisson SAS Hotel in Berlin, the 25 meters high AquaDom is the largest cylindrical aquarium ever built. Filled with about 900,000 liters of seawater, it contains some 2600 fish of 56 species.

Combined with a vast amount of sandblasted glass, the giant AquaDom gives a transparent-like feeling to the lobby. Guests and visitors are able to travel through the aquarium in a glass-enclosed elevator to reach a sightseeing point and restaurant under the glass roof. Two full-time divers are responsible for the care and feeding of the fish and maintenance of the aquarium.

Some of the interior rooms and suites look out over the atrium, offering "ocean views" of the AquaDom.

Construction

The AquaDom was opened in December 2003. It cost about 12.8 million euros. The acrylic glass cylinder was constructed by the U.S. company Reynolds Polymer Technology. The outside cylinder was manufactured on-site from four pieces; the inside cylinder for the elevator was delivered in one piece. The Aquadom is the largest acrylic glass cylinder in the world, with a diameter of over 11 meters, built on a 9 meters tall concrete foundation.

  4. So..you mentioned sandblasted glass...and there's no sandblasting of glass mentioned...nor is there any need for it...and for that matter it's not actually glass though they call it acrylic glass...never the less, a nice piece and beautiful concept...let's hope to see more of these.

  28. For those questioning the glass comment in the article:

I too believe it is acrylic glass. I have been into fish/aquariums (nowhere near this size, 300ish gallons is the largest) for many years.

It amazes me that people won't even attempt to find the truth, even when handed to them.

  30. I think the sandblased glass is the windows around the lobby that surrounds the tank. It says "Combined with the vast amounts of sandblasted glass...". The word combined means they're not talking about the AquaDom but something else.

Some people need to learn to read

  34. Wow! That is so cool! Damn good idea & i'm really more amazed by the fact it only cost 12 million euros to make it. Thats roughly about 9 million pounds i think, which is roughly how much our council waste on putting a new roundabout in!! lol! Why can't i live in Germany where they have innovative & interesting design but without wasting shed-loads of money (i.e our tax's!) on it!

  36. The sandblasted glass is on the windows of the building not the fish tank....

    calm down.

  40. I agree with Zenun, can't people just enjoy the beauty & the unique design? If you don't like it, don't look at it. If you can do better then get to work & prove it! But don't degrade it just to see yourself in print.

  52. Sand blasted glass is used for the bottom covering. They are like the little pieces of glass you find at some beaches. The glass is smooth and it has a satin like finish to it.

  54. About the glass question: The cylinder is actually made of acrylic glass which is chemically welded using a new technology so it becomes seamless. That is in my opinion the most exciting thing about it. The technique was developed and the Aquarium designed and built by ICM (http://icm-corp.com/).
I have no relation whatsoever with that company and place that link only for the technically interested. On that site there is also a link to an article about the AquaDom.

  56. Why oh why oh why is everyone so interested in the glass. I think there may be some people out there who need to get out more and just look at things.

  58. I mean...doesn't anyone care about the fish? The reef setup they opted to use? I'm assuming for such a large tank and considering the ratio of number to fish compared to number of species, it's a community/schooling tank... I mean, I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering/interested in its current contents...
