Darvaza, the Apocalypse Gas Crater
Located at Turkmenistan desert, Darvaza flaming crater is one of the most apocalyptic landscapes in the world. Its 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters depth have not been caused by volcanic activity or a meteorite impact. This crater was created sometime in the 50's when the Soviets were prospecting for natural gas in this area and it's been burning since then.Apparently animals find it mesmerizing, too. It is said that thousands of moths and spiders are literally drawn to the flame. By night, the light is really bright and it can be seen from a long distance. Moreover, it is really hot when you get close to the crater, so people can only stand next to it for a few minutes.
