Stop, in the name of Love

In mid 2007 Oak Lawn authorities, in Illinois, began hanging some humorous additions to the city stop signs in an attempt to have drivers obey the signs. They added slogans such as "and smell the roses" and "means that you aren't moving" to 50 stop signs.

Now, according to Chicago Tribune, Oak Lawn will have to remove the signs after the Illinois Department of Transportation determined they violate the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Mayor Dave Heilmann was very disappointed with the decision. "The community loved them", he said, "and we heard from all over the country about how thinking outside the box was a good way to reinforce the message that people need to stop". "I think government needs to take itself less seriously," he added. "We have to take the work seriously, but it's OK to smile and to be creative in enforcing a serious message."

What do you think about it?

They are taking themselves too seriously, and they wonder why people think the government is unpleasant.

Intersections that need round-abouts.

They're missing the ones reading "Hammer Time" and "Collaborate and listen".

"Drop and roll" would be good too.

We have a "hammer time" one on the Georgia Institute of Technology campus (or we did).

Was the STOP sign changed? No, it was not. Was it obscured, prevented from functioning? No.

The mindless bureaucrats strike again.

I've actually seen a sign in my neighboorhood, in which somebody stuck a sticker on the sign... so it reads STOP DRIVING. They covered it up too. :(

Those are just advertisements. Maybe they should let other companies pay to put their own advertisements on the Stop signs. They are advertisements because its someone else selling us on their interpretation of creative humor. Not everyone will laugh, and not everyone will get it.

In the town where I grew up they used to have a "At least slow down (formerly stop)" but it got stollen too often.
